Guide
Why I don’t transliterate by eye
On client sites I keep seeing one URL spelled three ways: “shchitky”, “schitky” and “shhitky”. To Google these are three different addresses. Transliteration needs one rule for the whole site.
Which standard to pick
- Ukrainian text — the official Cabinet of Ministers standard No. 55 (2010): “ж” → zh, “х” → kh, “щ” → shch, “зг” → zgh, and “є, ї, й, ю, я” are spelled differently at the start of a word.
- Russian text — the common Google style (kh, ts, shch) or GOST 7.79-2000 (x, c, shh) if your site already uses it.
Keep URLs short: 3–5 words, no prepositions. Changing URLs of existing pages? Add 301 redirects. The website audit shows whether redirects and URLs are clean.
Check URLs and redirects across the whole site
The website audit finds messy URLs, redirect chains and duplicates in minutes.
